Under the Pier

Sandown Pier
‘How about going under it for a change?' she said as we passed the pier.
We often walk past it. Sometimes we go inside to spend a few pennies on the rides or the slot machines. But we had never been under the huge structure to see the other side. What a show! A tangle of concrete beams, wrought iron, timber and cast. It was as if a cathedral had been laid down on the sand. The childish impression of having found the skeleton of a hundred-year-old boat. Maybe even that of a sea monster that once landed on the beach.
That's life on the Isle of Wight.
‘Et si on allait voir dessous pour une fois?’ m’a-t-elle lancé, alors que nous marchions près de la jetée.
On passe souvent devant. On y rentre parfois, pour dépenser quelques pennys dans les manèges ou les machines à sous. Jamais pourtant nous n’étions passé sous l’immense structure voir l’envers du décor. Quel spectacle! Un enchevêtrement de poutres de béton, de fer forgé, de fonte et de bois. Comme si une cathédrale s’était couchée sur la sable. L’impression enfantine d’avoir retrouvé le squelette centenaire d’un bateau. Peut-être même celui d’un monstre marin, venu s’échouer jadis sur la plage.
Ainsi va la vie sur l’Ile de Wight.
