Ryde Pier

I must confess I have a soft spot for Ryde Pier.
Eight years ago I came to the Isle of Wight for the first time. I think it was the first thing I saw from the ferry; this great overhang on the sea, like a path suspended out of time.
Since then, I've walked it back and forth over and over again, on foot and by car, in sunshine and under a heavy rain. I have also learned that it is the second longest pier in the country, but more importantly it is the oldest seaside leisure pier in the world.
That's life on the Isle of Wight.
Je dois bien vous avouer que j’ai un faible pour la jetée de Ryde.
Il y a huit ans, je venais pour la première fois sur l’ile de Wight. Je crois bien que c’est la première chose que j’ai vu depuis le ferry; cette grande avancée sur la mer, comme un chemin suspendu hors du temps.
Depuis, je l’ai parcouru dans les deux sens encore et encore, à pied et en voiture, sous le soleil et sous la pluie battante. J’ai aussi appris que c’est la deuxième plus longue jetée du pays mais surtout que c’est la plus ancienne jetée de plaisance en bord de mer au monde.
Ainsi va la vie sur l’Ile de Wight.
